Great for basketry work and sculptures. The willow is grown and steamed on our farm. Dark chocolate/black colour rods. Smooth rods as the bark has been removed. The tops are around 3ft-4ft in length.

Brown (dry) willow is placed in a boiler for a few hours to colour it a chocolate / black colour. It is then left to dry outside. Soak and mellow to make flexible.

Sculpture ideas & weaving inspiration
Currently available
Whissender is similar to Black Maul. The yellowy rods are stout and robust – ideal for big work.
Whissender isn’t as flexible as Black Maul and is a variety better suited to more experienced weavers.
A striking lime green/yellow colour when first cut. As the bark dries it turns a warm brown/yellow colour.
Requires soaking and mellowing.

Natural barked willow is placed in boiling water for several hours. The tannins are released turning the rod a toffee colour. The bark is then stripped and the rod left to dry.
