To create steamed willow rods, natural, brown dried willow (usually Black Maul) is boiled for several hours. This releases the tannins and stains the willow bark a dark chocolate / black colour. The bark remains on the willow. The rods are then dried outdoors.
Steamed willow rods require soaking and mellowing to make pliable.
Willow is sold by weight. Approximate number of rods per kilo; 3ft - 210 rods, 4ft - 155 rods, 5ft - 85 rods, 6ft - 65 rods, 7ft - 40 rods
