Black Maul is a supple and versatile willow. The willow isn’t black – it only takes on a black hue when steamed. Black Maul is held in high regard by weavers and is one of the best varieties of willow to use in beginners basketry.
Much of our farmland is used to grow Black Maul. Brown (dry) Black Maul willow requires soaking and mellowing to make it pliable.

Black Maul brown willow from the 2023/2024 crop. Due to weather conditions, it did not dry as well, and some rods are hail damaged.
This variety is suitable for sculpture, fencing and craft projects for weavers of all abilities.
We do not recommend using it for your best baskets.

Old French works very much like Black Maul. The yellowish rods are extremely flexible. While the colour is similar to Whissender, the rods are around the same thickness as Black Maul. Old French is a great alternative to Black Maul and is another good choice for basketry work.
