Although brown (dry) Flanders Red is suitable for basketry, its waxy skin can make it hard to work with. If you are new to basketry choose Black Maul, Dicky Meadows or Old French as these varieties are easier to weave with.

Natural barked willow is placed in boiling water for several hours. The tannins are released turning the rod a toffee colour. The bark is then stripped and the rod left to dry.
