A rapping iron is used to compress down the weave as you work and enable you to create a level weave. Also known as a hand iron.
Use between the stakes, side on, pointing into the basket (so as not to damage the facing weave)
The commander (the ring on the top) does provide a handy hanging loop, but its primary use is to assist you in straightening kinky stakes for square work, corners, etc.
The majority of basket makers use a 500g rapping iron. A 1kg rapping iron is better suited to rapping down hurdles or larger baskets.
Tools are handcrafted, and some variation in appearance and size may occur.
