This one-day course will focus on getting to know all the basic willow weaving tools, how they are used and what type to select for what job.

We will focus on the main tools of:

  • rapping iron- what weight and style, and what is the ring on the end for?
  • secateurs- bypass and snips, and when to use each 
  • bodkin- what size do you need and why?
  • side cutters, hook knives and other finishing tools

and also the additional tools of:

  • steaming sheets
  • soaking bags
  • hessian sheet
  • dragonfly fids.threaders
  • stripping brakes

We will look at basic tool maintenance and care (to include sharpening), storage of tools and how to make your own supplementary tools, which may include:

  • willow winder
  • bench hook
  • sharpening strop
  • sharpening stick
  • hoop jigs

For those progressing in their basketry, there will also be an opportunity to develop their knife work and to use cleaves and skeining tools.

Please note:

  • this course is physically demanding & you need a good degree of manual dexterity.

What do I need to bring?

  • Glasses (if you need them for close-up work).
  • Notebook and pen if you wish to make notes.
  • Old clothes, covered, flat shoes (no sandals or open toes).
  • Something to tie hair back with (if needed).

All materials included. Suitable for all weaving levels, great for beginners 18+.
