This product is perfect for those struggling to get to grips with the preparation of willow and wanting to explore basketry willow more.

Product description

Getting to know and properly preparing your material is the biggest barrier to progressing in basketry.

In this one-day course, we will explore the following:

  • bark on and bark off willow and the differences between them
  • different processes (stripping, steaming, boiling) and the willows they create
  • selection and identification of willow varieties and types 
  • varieties of willow, what they are used for, growth rates, colour and feel when working
  • when to use green willow and when to use dried willow
  • soaking and mellowing times, along with seasonal variation and variation for different varieties
  • record keeping 
  • how to extend working times
  • soaking and working setups
  • sorting 
  • home steaming
  • hoop making
  • storage and drying

You will complete a number of sample pieces, notes, complete sorting, steaming and a variety of other related tasks and take home all of these, alongside a variety of willows to experiment with.

Build a good, solid foundation for your weaving journey by combining this with our Basketmakers tools and toolkit  course the day after.

Please note:

  • This course is physically demanding, and you need a good degree of manual dexterity, and you will need to stand  to complete tasks/watch demonstrations. 

What do I need to bring?

  • Glasses (if you need them for close-up work).
  • Notebook and pen if you wish to make notes.
  • Old clothes, covered, flat shoes (no sandals or open toes).
  • Something to tie hair back with (if needed).

All materials included. Suitable for all weaving levels, great for beginners 18+.
