How willow weaving benefits your mental wellbeing

19 August 2025

In a world that seems evermore hectic and technology-driven, screen-free activities that reconnect us with nature are more important than ever. Hands-on arts and craft activities – such as willow weaving – also offer numerous benefits for our mental health.

1. Concentration and patience

Willow weaving is an engaging, mindful activity that requires you to concentrate on the work you are doing, and have the patience to see it through to completion.

Stepping out of the everyday rush and taking the time to weave a bespoke willow craft item is incredibly calming. Once in the rhythm of a weave, you find yourself completely absorbed in the work you’re doing. In the same way meditation helps the mind to focus, willow weaving has a similar effect.

2. Confidence building

Our willow weaving courses are taught in a way that enables both seasoned weavers and total beginners to embark on a project with confidence.

Our experienced tutors gently guide participants through the course, taking it step by step. Seeing a willow craft gradually take shape as each stage is completed is satisfying and rewarding.

3. Connecting with nature

Working with natural materials, such as the willow grown here on our Somerset farm, is known to have enormous mental health benefits.

When working with willow, you appreciate the beauty and uniqueness of each willow rod; how no two are quite the same. It brings home the abundance and individuality of nature.

We hold our weaving workshops on our willow farm, beautifully positioned on the Somerset levels. It’s the perfect place to appreciate both the beauty of the natural world around us, and the materials it gives us.

4. Sensory engagement

Working with natural materials is a very grounding experience. In the same way that plunging your hands into rich soil during gardening makes people feel connected to nature, weaving willow engages your senses. It is this sensory engagement that makes screen-free activities so beneficial to mental health.

Carefully bending and weaving willow rods is a tactile, engaging activity that makes full use of the dexterity of your hands and upper body. The repetitive, rhythmic nature of weaving helps you engage with your creative side and focus solely on being present in the moment, absorbed in the actions and nothing else.

5. Connecting with others

A shared love for arts and craft has brought people together for centuries. On our willow weaving courses, you’ll share a unique, creative experience with other like-minded people.

Each course is also an opportunity to experience nature connectivity on our Somerset farm. Being in nature boosts physical, social, and emotional well-being, and is even linked to improved cognitive thinking and resilience. Sometimes, on courses, there may be an opportunity to have a short guided tour of the farm and the willow beds (seasonally and staffing dependent). This helps course attendees truly connect with the material they are using, and the processes involved in harvesting/preparing it for weaving.

We have a wide range of willow weaving courses on offer – and more to come. Sign up to our newsletter on our contact page to be the first to hear about new courses.

If you’re interested in booking a crafting session with friends or family, we also offer bespoke courses for 6-10 people. Please get in touch if you would like to book.
