Willow Flags & Bunting
Create rustic, natural decorations using willow rods. This project works well for indoor or outdoor displays, garden parties, and seasonal decor. You can make individual flags or join them into bunting.
Materials
- Soaked willow rods (approx. 5 ft for flags; adjust length as needed)
- Secateurs
- String, ribbon, wool, or tissue paper for joining flags into bunting
- Measuring stick (cut from a small piece of willow)
Making Willow Flags
Measure & Mark
- Use a measuring stick to determine the size of the flag’s top, bottom, and point.
- Typical measurements: ~4 in top, ~5 in sides of the triangle. Adjust as needed.
Form the Flag Shape
- Take the butt end of the rod. Make a kink at the top and at the point (tip) of the triangle.
- Add a kink at the back to complete your triangle shape.
Weave for Stability
- Wrap the rod twice around the main stem at each bend to prevent slipping.
- Continue weaving in a diagonal zigzag pattern along the flag.
- Turn to opposite sides as needed, always double-wrapping to secure.
Trim & Finish
- Cut off excess willow at top and bottom.
- Your flag is now ready to use individually or as part of a bunting.
Creating Willow Bunting
Repeat Flag Steps
- Use one finished flag as a template for size and shape.
- Make multiple flags as desired.
Join Flags
- Connect flags with string or ribbon.
- Wrap, knot, leave a gap, then repeat for the next flag.
- Optional: decorate gaps with wool, tissue paper, or fairy lights.
Display
- Hang your bunting indoors or outdoors.
- Natural willow looks rustic, but you can use coloured rods for seasonal or themed events.
Tips
- Double wrapping at bends prevents slippage.
- Flags can be scaled up or down depending on rod thickness and desired size.
- Incorporate lights or decorations for a festive touch.
