Meet the people behind the scenes that make the magic happen here at Musgrove Willows.

Ellen Musgrove

I was born and brought up in Aberdare, in the South Wales valleys. I attended Aberdare Girls Comprehensive, an all-girls secondary school, now sadly closed. After A levels I took a HND in Business Administration in Swansea. Following graduation I went to work for the Appeals and Fraud sections of the Department of the Social Security in Central London.

My Mum was brought up in Westonzoyland and on one of my annual holidays I decided to visit my Aunt who still lived in the family home at No's 8 Lakewall Westonzoyland. One of my cousins suggested I meet some of his friends at a local pub one Sunday evening and that's how I met Mike. Mike lived at the other end of Lakewall, no's 20 and ran what was then, L.A Musgrove & Son Willow Growers with his dad Les.

I guess you’d say the rest is history!!!

What is your role at Musgrove Willows?

Company Director, in charge of Personnel, Company Development, etc etc.

What do you like about working at Musgrove Willows?

I love being part of a team and continuing a traditional business with my husband and son. Every day is different, sometimes I’m office based and on others I may be outside getting my hands dirty shifting willow about.

What makes a good day at work?

Knowing I've done the best I can for our customers and staff. Providing a good efficient service and everything has run smoothly.

What is a bad day at work?

When courier services let you down, the telephone/internet doesn't work or mother nature decides she wants to make life very difficult!

What are your hobbies and outside interests?

Walking my dogs Milly and Hunter. Running, spending time with Mike and our children Jack and Holly. Reading and a good Rioja.

What makes you laugh?

Mike – in a good way!

What is your role at Musgrove Willows?

I work part-time here processing your willow and postal orders, processing invoices, answering the telephone & trying to assist with general enquiries from the wealth of knowledge I have picked up from listening to both Ellen and Amanda.

What do you like about working at Musgrove Willows?

I enjoy working for a family business, the directors and my colleagues in the office are great fun and have looked after me and made me feel so welcome from the day I started! The office banter also makes the day more enjoyable.

What makes a good day at work?

When everything runs smoothly, our customers are happy and Mike Musgrove aka Victor Meldrew is in a good mood and doesn’t threaten me with my P45.
Also when Ellen makes one of her amazing cakes for a course and there are left overs, yum!

What is a bad day at work?

When Jack is hiding under my desk ready to scare the life out of me as I walk through the door, or when both Jack and Mike team up and think it’s hilarious to bring in HUGE creepy crawlies for us to find in lunch boxes or biscuit tins!

What are your hobbies and outside interests?

Since having my son my hobbies now revolve around wrestling, being a teenage mutant ninja turtle, baking (terribly), impersonating spiderman and the xbox! So outside of this I enjoy eating, socializing, keeping fit, family time and lots of wine.

What makes you laugh?

My crazy son Kingston, Michael McIntyre and my Sister.

Kelly Meacham

I'm a Bristol lady at heart, but gradually got drawn to the delights of Somerset with my family over the years. After my school days I went on to College, studying A Levels in Mathematics and Business. I then spent a number of years working in many different environments including hospitality and decided that my main love was business finance, which brought me back to Somerset to attend a college course in Accounting. During this time I met my husband to be, who keeps me grounded and gave me two wonderful children who keep me very busy. Before joining the Musgrove Willows team, I worked for a Bathroom manufacturing company as a Finance Assistant.

Q&A with Kelly

What is your role at Musgrove Willows?

My main role is Finance Officer, so I make sure that our records are kept up to date and that everyone is paid on time. I also process Customer payments and deal with the Credit control side of things including making sure that customers have regular statements and copies of invoices. I’m involved with restocking our supplies and ensuring that our prices are competitive for our customers. Although this is my main role here at Musgrove Willows, I’ll turn my hand to anything and the Musgroves certainly keep me on my toes with ongoing projects.

What do you like about working at Musgrove Willows?

Everyone is very friendly, which makes coming into work a joy. I love the variety that Musgrove Willows has to offer, one minute you would be dealing with paperwork and the next helping to move Coffins around. It’s a very unique business and I’m still learning new things about the Willow industry all the time. I thrive on the challenges that everyday brings.

What makes a good day at work?

A good day for me is when I feel that I’ve achieved as much as possible. I like being busy and I think most days are that.

What is a bad day at work?

Luckily they are few and far between.

What are your hobbies and outside interests?

Having two young children keeps me occupied most of the time, but I do enjoy baking when I can, in particular cake decorating. I enjoy watching films and socialising with friends. When I gain the energy I occasionally get to go swimming and I’m about to start studying my Stage 2 Sage course.

What makes you laugh?

Everyone at Musgrove Willows makes me chuckle, but most of all my partner, I think he was a jester in a past life.
