Ivor Hancock

27 September 2022

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Ivor Hancock.

Ivor began basket making at the age of 13 working for a company in North Petherton. He was a very traditional Somerset basket maker and learned his trade the ‘old-fashioned way’. His proper piece work apprenticeship consisted of making bottoms for months before he was allowed to move on to other parts of a basket.

Despite holding several other jobs throughout his life, Ivor still kept basket making right up until his last few years.

Ivor demonstrated his skills at the Avalon Marshes Centre at Shapwick and on the  Blackdown Hills. For many years, he also played an active role within the Hedgelaying Association. Jack Musgrove began his weaving with Ivor and Ivor regularly provided baskets for our shop.

Ivor and his wife Joyce were not only customers of Musgrove Willows but also great friends. They were always eager to help or demonstrate at our charity coffee mornings, exhibitions and open days.

Ivor will be greatly missed. With his passing we have lost a wealth of knowledge and history.

Ivor’s family have informed us that his funeral  will be held at 11.30am on 5th October at North Petherton Church. After the service and burial, there will be refreshments at the Admirals Landing in Bridgwater. All that knew him are welcome.
