5 hidden benefits of willow fencing
29 April 2025

In a world full of cheap, flimsy wooden fence panels and unsustainable plastic fencing, Musgrove Willows’ authentic willow fencing is an excellent choice – for modern and period properties alike. Not only do our willow fences offer an eye-catching, natural aesthetic, they also have a host of benefits for the environment.
Here are our top five benefits to choosing a willow fence for your garden.
1. A natural windbreak
Willow fences provide a natural windbreak, whilst remaining stable – even in high winds. The main weave and construction of the fence panel means they block out the full force of the wind, but the gaps in the weave allow some wind to pass through. This enables a willow fence panel to protect your garden and withstand strong winds.
On a hot day, the gaps in the weave allow heat to escape from sheltered spots so fresher, cooler air can permeate.
2. Privacy and protection
Woven willow fence panels offer a high degree of privacy and seclusion. Although not totally solid, they create a peaceful sanctuary and a sense of security.
Willow fences are not only great for boundary fencing, they can also be used to create zoned areas within a garden, or provide a natural, attractive cover to hide outdoor objects you’d rather not see (e.g. bins, septic tanks, oil tanks etc.).
3. Sustainable: An eco-friendly choice
Each of our woven willow fence panels is handcrafted on site by our skilled craftsmen and women using willow grown right here on our Somerset farm.
Our farming practices work sensitively with the local environment, making our fence panels are a very sustainable option. Our ribbon willow fencing is 100% bio-degradable, and when it reaches the end of its lifespan leaves no harmful residue or landfill.
4. Easy to install and maintain
Our willow fences are lightweight and easy to transport and install. They also don’t require a huge amount of maintenance to keep them looking great.
To maintain your willow fencing, you will need to apply a treatment to prolong its life. Applying a mixture of boiled linseed oil and turpentine to each willow fence panel up to twice a year will protect them. Our Fence Panel Protector packs contain enough to treat up to four 6ft x 6ft willow fence panels.
5. A natural aesthetic
Each Musgrove Willows fence panel is unique and reflects our high quality, handcrafted approach. Alongside our ribbon fencing, we offer framed fencing panels and framed fencing panels with trellis for a different look.
We can also help you create something bespoke and completely your own with our made-to-measure willow fencing, for both ribbon and framed fence panels. Whether you want to combine the elegance of a country cottage garden with the natural textures of our ribbon fence panels, or create a softened contemporary look to compliment a modern house, we have the fencing to suit your needs.
